UHSHL Coaches

Welcome!
You're here because you are a current Coach or a committed Parent, Teacher, or Community Member considering becoming a Coach for your school's High School Horseshoe Team.  We want to thank you for considering this noble opportunity to influence the lives of the youth in your community.

...What's that you say?  You are concerned that you can't coach because you have no experience with organized horseshoes?  No worries.  The most important thing is that you are committed to supporting your team.  UHSHL will provide resources to aid you in coaching the game.  Because horseshoes is a simple game, kids pick it up easily.  This means that most of the coaching effort focuses on helping kids improve, plus coordinating team activities.  Each season as new teams come on board we have new coaches who are parents who had no prior experience with organized Horseshoes, yet they are able to successfully coach their teams.  YOU can do it too!

Here are the fundamental duties of a UHSHL team coach for you to consider.
  • Each team needs at least one coach; two is preferable (Head & Assistant).
  • Coaches oversee all of their Team practice and Match activities.
  • Coaches select their Top-5 competitors for each match, ranked in order of Ringer percentage high (A) to low (E).  (see Student page and Match Play for a synopsis of how matches are run).
  • Coaches coordinate any needed match travel with team members and their parents.
  • Coaches are responsible to ensure team members adhere to UHSHL eligibility requirements.
  • As applicable, coaches coordinate/delegate fundraiser/sponsorship drives with team members and families.
  • All coaches must register with the UHSHL which includes NHPA membership/Insurance with the Southern or Northern Utah Charter ($40 annually).
